I would definitely look at renting. Unless you can really justify A LOT of work, it doesn't make sense to buy. This is coming from a guy that just sold my JD350B in December. I owned it for 5 years and I did a ton of work. The last 1 1/2 years it mostly sat. No sense having an expense piece sitting around, so I got my money back. Of course, the week after I sold it, I "saw" four of five dozer projects that needed to be done. I plan on renting one for the weekend next summer to knock out all my projects.
Over those five years, I only put 80 hours on the dozer. Really that's not a lot. A new dozer I would think would cut that time in 1/3. As you can see in the pics 3-4 of those hours were the wife driving around in the snow when I first picked it up.
You will spend a ton of time looking for one, truly inspecting the undercarriage, trucking, fluid checks/changes when you get it home. And the list goes on. I have been on a newer D4 and D5 Cat. There is no comparison to an older dozer.
In my area of mid Michigan. I can have a NEW JD450 dozer dropped off at the house for $450 a day or $1300 for the week. It will run circles around older equipment. And it if it pukes out, you pick up the phone. You wont do that with a late 60s dozer.
Just my opinion. Good luck. And if you buy definitely post pics. I attached a pic. I miss the little guy, but just didn't need it anymore. Full 6 way hydraulic blade and reverser. No clutching. Great little machine.
