Was at the Domino sugar plant just south of New Orleans today doing a pickup. This one plant has been in production since 1909 and produces over 1 Million Tons (that's 2 billion lbs) of sugar a year. The plant sits on land that was settled before there was a United States. The house that stands on the property today was built in 1839.
On this property there are still many pecan trees all planted in nice straight rows. So we can assume they were planted between 1839 and 1909.
Since the trees are on fenced property; the only people that usually get any are employees. So many of the pecans just sit there and rot on the ground; or the squirrels and crows get them. The truck drivers that go there are afraid to take any as they do not know you can. While I was waiting to get to the dock I took a few minutes to pick up some of the pecans to bring home.
I picked up all these pecans from under 1 tree. Still had plenty left; I just got tired of picking them up. With all the trees there you could fill up a entire leaf garbage bag with no problems. Now all I need to do is sit here and pick all these shells and I might be able to talk the wife into making me some pralines.
