I have never really had a hobby, but I’ve pursued numerous special interests. Looking back over the past 50 years it would appear that my hobby has been the remodeling of old houses and clearing land, as that’s where I’ve spent most of my time and money. The latest is a small house that I’m now living in; I repainted every surface in the house, even under the cabinet and closet shelves, and sanded, stained and varnished the hardwood floors. In the spring I built a 12’ by 24’ cover over the patio, and I just finished a 250’ chain link backyard fence. Next I’m going to build a car cover over my driveway, and then I’m going to paint the entire exterior of the house. I am also in the process of clearing four acres of dense woods behind the house. (In order to build my other house, on an adjoining property, I had to clear the entire 12-acre lot using only chain saw, 8n and JD 1020, and can of gasoline. Took several years, working on weekends.)
My other interests are music (listening, playing and singing: I’m in two church choirs, a quartet, and I do solo gigs in area churches.) I have a large library, including an extensive Civil War collection. I have never “collected” anything, per se, but I do have large accumulations of things: guns, war relics, bottles, jugs, tools, furniture, and an eclectic assortment of many unique or unusual items.
At 74 I’m running out of time and steam, but I still have lots to do. I want to finish writing my family history and illustrating it with hundreds of old family photos. In short, the word “boredom" is a concept to which I cannot relate.
