Are there any other problems with the instruments? Like temp or fuel gauges doing strange things? That could be an indication of an instrument panel power loss, which would cause the alternator lamp to give a false reading.
You'll need a volt meter and catch it in the act. Voltage should be around 14 to 15 volts, engine revved up.
Intermittent charging can also be caused by sticking brushes, especially if the alternator is oily or caked with dirt or grass. Most can be disassembled and cleaned.
It can also be caused by bad electrical connections, loose worn wet or oily belt, overheating (dirty or trying to maintain a bad battery).
And it can simply be a failing alternator. You can probably get a rebuilt one at the auto supply, just match it up, check the amp rating, and the pulley size/alignment.
