I got my cousin a new office model black and white laser Canon last year for $105, fax, printer, scanner. He uses it a lot in their well business. Generic cartridges were around $25, no issues.

What a person does with a printer will determine what works best. Walmart, photo place, sure, they print out good, and I have seen their prints. But, closest place to print out photos is 30 miles away, Walmart is 70, not handy. Printing out one or two pictures once in a while, not as handy, plus, online services, not really practical unless you send in several. Quality? I've got good eyes with glasses, home prints aren't noticeably worse than shop printed, look just as good using the right printer and paper. At least if you have to look hard and take a magnifying glass to them to notice a difference, close enough. With lighter printing, set of ink can last me close to a year or so. I just looked on Amazon, I can get 4 full sets for $15 shipped (that's without researching prices either, just one of the first results, and it has decent reviews), I didn't calculate that out per page/photo, but it's pretty cheap. I do like laser, got a color Samsung a few years ago for $60 shipped from Staples, used it until it ran out of toner. But, for photos, you need an inkjet, and I didn't see much point keeping around 2 printers in use, especially when inkjets print so cheap and without issue when using generic ink. Lasers won't dry out of course, and they are cheaper if you print a lot. It's been several years since I've had an inkjet dry out on me, so I don't see it as an issue for me. Text and non-photo graphic quality with laser can be quite impressive.

If you buy name brand ink, last time I looked into it, Brother was a bit better on both inkjet and laser. With Canon laser, last time I looked, their cartridges included one of the wear items in the laser printer that other manufacturers did not (they fail and cost more to replace, but after many prints in general).
