Jim, I am probably on a minor point here, but if the lifting springs are properly set there is no "need" for the trip wheel/tire to have any more tread grip than the other tire. My number #8 trip wheel skidded when lowering years ago...I adjusted the spring tensions and never have that problem now.
From my learning experience (my study of ag history and the advice of the late Hugh MacKay) after WWII plows ordered with rims for rubber tires came from the factory with only the rims; the farmer or dealer scrounged for a pair of tires to fit, thus the reason many old plow tires do not have matching tire treads.
