Our town is at the epicenter of a massive emerald ash borer infestation. Several trees in my yard have already succumbed - the remainder are clearly one their way. Nearby, entire stands of ash trees have been killed off. So I've been cutting/burning them for heat as they die off.
Anyway, I've found if you split/stack ash then keep it covered (dry) it will keep OK for a couple years. Powder beetles may get under the bark but they do not cause much damage to the heartwood so long as the wood is dry. OTOH the wood deteriorates (rots) quickly if left on the stump. And cut wood rots fast if left uncovered.
