Thank you for the diagram Greg. In the diagram I don't see a first speed synchro. My tranny has a synchronized first gear. I do see a reverse idler. This idler could have the chipped gear. I drove it this evening and the chipped gear sound does not change with acceleration or deceleration in any gear. It sounds the same while driving as it does in neutral. It's not terribly bad sounding but I can feel it slightly in the gear shift knob. If I took my hearing aids out I don't think I would be able to hear it while driving it. Before this happened it did have a slight chipped gear sound in reverse only so I think it has been this way for quite awhile only not quite as bad as it is now. I'll have to crawl under it and scrape some grease away tomorrow to get some specs and then report back. I used to have the original tranny out of this pickup laying around somewhere but I can't find it now. Reverse idler is probably ok in that tranny.
