When soil conditions are right, a subsoiler can be used effectively to shatter the deeper layers, break up hard pan etc.
What size tractor do you have to pull one with ?
Subsoiler, (single shank), middle buster, (has a wing plow on it) and even a single bottom moldboard plow can be used to make a shallow trench in the soil.
To obtain beneficial results, the shattering/fracturing of the sub-layers of soil is best, it allows moisture and root systems to penetrate deeper.
