I've had one out too for about the same problems, the splines on the cable end were stripped but that weld was cracked around it too. I don't remember anything specific to to remind me of noting on here. It is tight under there but I've become fairly used to working behind/under instrument panels. It does come out, and I do think much had to come out of the way but things were tight, you might consider removing drivers seat for room to craw around and work.
Another thing you need to check is the clutch cable, the cable is pretty common failure for these, also check the mounting flange on the firewall for cracks too.
