Cooter143 said: (quoted from post at 10:28:53 08/30/15) Actually, the "Good Book" tells us that everyone is a liar, and I don't disagree.

By your criteria, there would be no way to evaluate a candidate until they actually took office. What I would like to point out is that you actually do the things you say that you aren't doing in this case. In this instance, you have just chosen to exclude adultery.

One thing you need to see that there is a difference between someone who has told a lie (everyone), and someone that is a willful, consistent liar (not everyone). It is not hypocrisy to call someone to strive WITH YOU in reaching for a higher standard than either can keep. AND holding each other accountable when one of you falls short. This is the essential element in self-improvement. By your thought process, we would all abandon helping others because we have disqualified ourselves and have nothing to offer.

Also, there are areas of life that require higher standards than others. It is not wrong to establish moral, ethical criteria for certain offices that do not apply to the general population. I have certain clearances at work that establish me as QUALIFIED to access different levels of information that not everyone has access to. To obtain this clearance, my CHARACTER was evaluated. My behavior was also evaluated to see if there were any PATTERNS of unworthy behavior.

According to your reasoning, why would they do that? Were you in the military? If so, why was there such a thing as a code of conduct? Did you have CORE VALUES during your service? Why? These aren't laws, they are principles. What purpose could they possibly serve by your reasoning?

When I was in service regulations stated that any action between a service member and someone they were not married to was illegal. That affected both married and single members. The only time I saw anyone punished under that regulation was when our commander, who's first wife cheated on him, had to deal with a soldier messing around on his spouse or another soldiers spouse. That was one commander we had for 2 years. He moved to a staff position and retired a few years later. At the time I was one of the very few that wasn't running around on my wife.

The whole reason extra marital affairs affect someone in the military as far as security is concerned is because of the possible blackmail.

One BN CMD had a weekly NCO/officer class. One week he got behind the podium and put two cans of pop on it. Then he told us he had stopped to get a pop and the machine gave him two. His question was "what would you do, call the vendor and make it right or walk away thinking about how lucky you were". The CMD then started going around the room asking people. Everyone was telling him that they would contact the vendor. When he got to me I told him that I would keep it and think I was lucky. He excused me from the class, thanked me for being honest and not telling him what I thought he wanted to hear.

So what's your level of honesty? Would you keep the extra pop? Like I said while I don't agree with what they are doing until you can prove harm to you it's none of your business. Not a double standard. But unless you have a signed sworn confession from both parties or photographic evidence you don't know for sure. And if you have photos you most likely violated the law to get them. So where does that leave you? Without that statement or photos you are spreading rumors and could be subject to legal action.

Thing of it is as far a voting for people is you don't get much of a choice. If you refuse to vote for A or B you waste a vote on C. I don't know how to change the system. But it's been a long time sense I met an honest politician at any level, in fact I've never met an honest politician.

Knowing that humans are humans and very few if any uphold every one of their marital vows I find it hard to fault someone else for that. Heck my wife vowed to "love, honor and obey" and in almost 42 years I haven't seen that obey part at all. So I guess I should file for divorce because it's illegal to beat them????

Rick

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
