I think in the case of contractors, they need to get a partial down payment, especially from someone they don't know well. A friend of mine has a auto repair shop, and he usually has a couple of cars there that the owner cannot afford to fix. Sometimes, they still owe on the car. He has had folks not pay him a few times.
