That's exactly how it is today. I've received notifications that the position was filled, another candidate was selected, over 1 year later ! Zillion resumes out there, all sorted by algorithm, though you can call sometimes to follow up, just to insure it was received, and some will send an email notifying you of this. They will never tell you any more than the job was filled and another candidate was selected. I'm not exactly living in the past either, but the vast majority of it goes like this today. Gone are the days of a carefully prepared resume, that is mailed in, and a timely response sent back, though I did recently get a hand signed letter by a principal of an architecture firm for a low key position I was overqualified for, thanking me for applying, stating another candidate was selected. I appreciated that, regardless, but its a rarity. Gone are the days of showing up to a place of business early, exhibiting preparedness to immediately go to work, or just inquiring about work, filling out an application for any open positions, for future consideration as it would be on file. Try to hand deliver a resume, you'll get shown the door for the most part, treated like a salesman making a cold call. Most will not even entertain a phone call about an open or advertised position. Everyone is a recruiter today, and you might find a dozen working on staffing the same exact position(s) for a client, all competing with each other. It used to work, show up early, not in the afternoon, with good personal appearance, resume in hand, ready to work, with have a good chance of getting hired, just because you showed up.

I just received a notification that a job I applied for was filled, 14 months after I applied. I tactfully busted their chops about it, they forget what its like to be a job candidate. I ended it, don't call us, we'll call you, basically stating that if this 13 month late notice is any indication of how you run your company, (then cited a big federal/fraud case they were involved with at Ft Bragg in the 90's just to open an old wound and rub it in with salt) I'd certainly NOT want to work for you anyways. I could care less at this point after 8 years of dealing with it. The other big thing is age, they discriminate heavily with that, and it does not matter that you have 20 years experience, a solid resume, excellent references, letters of recommendation, its all meaningless if you are in your 40's or beyond. I found it to be true with one firm I've been recruited for and presented to 6 times now. They just don't want anyone over a certain age, and there really was no other good reason, recruiters knew that, or they'd not have selected me in the first place, 6 completely different ones out of the same local candidate pool,( career builder, monster and similar etc.) HR people today are a strange breed to anyone with some years or miles under their belt, lot of small talk about nothing is all I ever get from these people. Fun to be a job seeker today, all the pre-employment investigation, screening, company handbooks/policies, lot of red tape and complexity, when it was a no brainer years ago, as your qualifications and past/current performance was most important.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
