My cub cadet two banger lost all power last night. Throttle cable broke so it just ran low idle speed. Irrelevant but just had to throw that in for now. I would not overlook the governor linkage. On a Kohler it was quite easy for the arm on governor to slip and then it would not open up carburetor under load. Run perfect until needed to go to work. I don't know how that engine is governed but I would make sure the carb can open fully when calling for work. If it starts good, you can pretty well forget compression issues. Many start hard , but run good when valves are too tight. I don't know if overhead valve engine or not but if it is , you could have a valve or rocker issue.
