Okay, Here's a minority opinion. Please don't hate me for disagreeing.
I use Y-Tex tags on all of my cows. I get them at the local farmer's co-op. I almost never lose a tag. Some of my old cows have had the same tag in their ears for 10 or 12 years. I can still read the printing on them.
As someone else mentioned, I always squeeze the stud into the tag after I insert the tag just to make sure the stud is completely seated.
BTW - I use the same gun for insertion of the tags that I bought 15 years ago. I take it apart periodically and clean the cylinder in it, but other than that, it's good to go.
