Bruce, whenever we travel from Wisconsin to Canada we ride the SS Badger, a 400ft ferry across Lake Michigan. Takes 4 hrs and you don't have to go thru Chicago. Ferry has a couple food counters, lots of room to sit and read or watch the water go by. Ferry ride is not cheap, but sure more fun than going thru Chi Town and you save a bunch of miles driving south and then back north.
Just search online for SS Badger; runs from Ludington, MI to Manitowoc, Wi. It can haul at least 10 semis and about 40 cars per trip.
There also is a new, smaller, and very fast ferry out of Milwaukee to Michigan; runs about 50 mph and takes 2 hrs. I have not ridden that yet....but I will!
