Normally water from the defrost cycle drains down into a pan in the bottom of the fridge, where it evaporates. Some fridges have a rubber tip on the drain line that lets the water drip slowly into the evaporator pan. If that nozzle gets plugged with dust or lint, as our Whirlpool did, the water backs up into the refrigerator compartment and freezes part of the coil.
I took off the nozzle, cut the end off of the nozzle to double the size of the opening, let the ice melt out of the coil before I restarted the fridge and that solved the problem. Manual may or may not tell you about this. You may have to remove the bottom portion of the cover on the back of the fridge to see the evaporator pan.
