If the TA is out of adjustment, or the TA lever is missing and it is not a TA delete tractor, the gears will get stuck. This happens most often when the tractor is going up hill, or has a load applied. The TA has a sprag clutch that holds the TA case from turning backward when the TA is in reduction. It holds the driving force of the engine to the transmission. An illustration: in a stick shift truck, if you pull up a ramp, then push in the clutch while still in gear, the truck will coast backwards down the hill. As it moves backwards, the clutch driven disk turns backwards (from the drivers point of view, it is turning clockwise, while the engine is turning CCW. The same happens with a tractor. If it has a TA, the TA sprag prevents this reversing of rotation, and the trans binds. If the TA is in proper adjustment, the TA front dry clutch releases as the clutch is pushed down. this releases the tension and allows shifting. SO a bad adjustment of the clutch and TA clutch, or the removal of the TA levers, will cause the issue. Jim
