There is up 8" of soil on the plateau of land {1/2 to 1 mile wide} between the cliff edge and the low mountain inland. The further you go towards the mountain the soil depth drops to 4".

Most grass is conserved as silage either chopped or wrapped as big round bales. We do get some dry days when a few farmers make some small square hay bales for the horse people.
