Grew up with road apples. Still got them around today. I remember a couple of years ago when some transplants moved into the county and complained at a couple of weekly meetings, wanted bags hung onto the horses derrieres and there were no Amish folks in that meeting. They said what they said and it became clear that they were welcome to transplant back to where they transplanted from, so they quietly left and never came back. That hasn't come back up again. Heck, when we were little kids and the parents went grocery shopping and left us outside, we used to have road apple fights right outside the store by picking up apples from the hitching posts. Washed up and out of the clothes easy enough. Heck, we'd put whole apples in our pants pockets so we could reach in, tear off a chunk, roll them up and throw them at each other. The best ones were made out of good and wet oats. They splattered the best. The hay ones were a bit harder and stung to get hit by. Sometimes we didn't get it all out of our pockets and Mom would get upset when she'd do the laundry and checked our pockets.
