Vac seal the jar if you can, it really extends the life of the food. Things dont get stale or pick up flavors/odors. Things like saltine crackers actually last long enough for me to eat them now, rather than throwing half of them out. Almonds stay crunchy as the day you brought them home, those I have had vac sealed in a jar for a year and they were still perfect.
I started with a food saver jar lid and a brake bleader. Now I use a HVAC vacuum pump and a home made bell chamber but thats kinda overkill for the few things I do (but I owned it already). Half gallon jars are just over a buck when you catch sales, thats super cheap considering the price of food you wont throw out and they can be used over and over.
