After you put your replacement cartridge into the tube, screw the tube back onto the head only about half way, then push the rod back in and pump the handle or push the button a few times before tightening the rest of the way. In forty years I've never had a gun not self-prime this way. Also works to loosen the tube should you hit an air pocket later on for some reason. Not so common anymore with the cartridge tubes but in the old days I remember my Grandpa filling grease guns by hand with a 5 gallon pail of grease and a putty knife. There were occasional moments of frustration with air pockets then. But he had more patience then most. Had to to roll his own smokes.🚬
