Lanz was German made over grown( waaaay overgrown compared to Cub Cadet) simple garden tractor-- one cylinder, 2 stroke with a blower- think of a Detroit single cylinder linear flow. Field Marshall was a British company that started with the Lanz engine under license and did a few modifications for English market- the 'plow winch' instead of direct pull of 'plough'. Design time meant the one cylinder wasn't really unusual- think of early steam tractors and the early McCormick single cylinder gas/distillates. Good design for use in a transition from horse equipment, blacksmith and steam railroad technical support level- keep it simple, build it heavy to last awhile. Sort of like a Harley of the tractor world- Teasing Alert! (Harley and JD two pops have a lot in common also) RN
