I bought a John Deere 1020 last march at an auction in SE Oklahoma and it had a very noisy hydraulic system and the noise would quit when the 3pt was raising and return immediately when it stopped raising. Also the noise would stop when I depressed the clutch sufficiently to stop the transmission oil pump from running. After much looking I found that the transmission oil supply line to the up front main pump and the front reservoir oil return line were swapped in their connection points at the rear of the tractor (the ports are the same and the lines are long so with a little forcing they will swap). When this is done what was the supply line is now becomes the return line and the check valve that is in that line actually prevents the return flow. So the oil supplied from the transmission pump is now mostly dumped through the transmission oil pressure relief valve making lots of noise. Also that oil coming back from the front reservoir is used to lubricate bearings and gears in the transmission and differential which the swapping of those lines will completely stop. There are a number of different John Deere tractor models that that have a similar configured system and might be able to experience a similar problem. However the JD1020 is the only model that I have direct experience with.
