Thanks for your input. I did some checking with a volt meter. The battery test at 12.9v. When it is turning the starter it drops to 11.6v. When the engine is then running it goes back to 12.9v until the rpm is increased. Eventually the volts from the battery jump to 14.0v. This happens at the same time the ammeter dial drops to discharge. My conclusion is that the regulator in the alternator "kicks in" and starts charging and that the ammeter must be connected backwards. I am a little stumped by this since I have been following a diagram from a conversion kit a friend used on his 800. Does my conclusion make sense? Another suprise I encountered: The ignition side has a ballast resistor to reduce the voltage to the points. I checked the voltage on the battery side of the resistor and got a 12.9v reading as expected. The question is that the ignition side also read 12.9v. I expected to get a reading more like 6-7v. Does this mean I have the wrong resistor or that the one I have is bad? Thanks for any help.
