Picton was and still is owned by the largest land owning family in Pembrokeshire County. During the English Civil War the castle was loyal to King Charles but was besieged by the Parliamentarian troops for a short while before surrendering. Only the outer defence walls were destroyed leaving the main tower intact.
the family restored the centre tower and raised the gate house entrance level to the first floor. The original ground floor level became the kitchens and work rooms.
The castle over the next 100's of years was converted into a luxurious home for the family. The outer walls are painted in a "white masonery paint" which I was told was normal practice in medieval times to make the castle stand out and be imposing to the peasants.
The castle & estate is still privately owned by the decendants of the original family. The front half of the castle and the gardens are open to the public,
