John, I'd go to the doctor TODAY and get it checked out. There is a spider called a Brown Recluse... the venom from it causes necrosis (rotting) of the flesh. It literally kills the flesh and the flesh becomes infected and it spreads. That may be why you see the "darkening" around the bite.
My nephew was bitten by a brown recluse once (uncommon spider in MN) walking home from the pool in sandals. It rotted an area of flesh on the top of his foot that was about the size of a silver dollar pancake. Doctor immediately "debrided" (unsure of spelling) his foot (cutting or scraping away any dead flesh) put him on strong antibiotics for a couple of weeks. I think he had to return for that procedure a couple of times.
