Wales is renown for its numerous medieval castles which the English built to keep down the native Welsh population.
There was an English Civil War in the mid 1600's. The troops fighting for the Parliament defeated the Royalists who supported King Charles 1st; and Charles was beheaded.
To prevent castles being ever used again, they were partially destroyed, and most are just ruins to-day
