Amen. Couple of weeks ago, next door neighbor told me he was having some landscaping blocks along the side of his house removed and putting sod in its place. I asked what he was going to do with them. (He had given me (free) about 50 blocks last year when they redid their back yard with a poured concrete stamped patio.) He kind of hesitated and I figured he was reluctant to give them away free this time. So I said "how much do you want for them?" He hesitated again so I said "I'll give you $20, how's that?" He agreed. That's under 40 cents/block. Retail is about $1.50. This weekend, I backed my p/u alongside the house and he helped me load them. My wife came home and I told her to give the neighbor $20. She went up to his wife who wouldn't take it, saying she was grateful to just have someone take them. I insisted she go give it to the man as I made a deal. It caused a little rift between the 2 neighbors for a minute but a deal's a deal. I did complain to the guy that were was some dirt on them and why didn't he hose them down first. :lol:
As for the OP,
1) I would have confirmed the price before I drove over there or at least before I loaded them, since an inspection might impact what I'd be willing to pay.
2) If my expectation of "couple of bucks" was $2, I'd have countered with, "whoa, your husband said $2, how does $2.50 sound?" Chances are you'd settle on $3 or at least something below $4.
