I know a few who became electricians by joining the union, going to tech college in evenings. 6 years one guy is now a commercial electrician. Another is a union pipe fitter.
The problem is it's the good old boy system at work. You need to know someone in the union to get in. My brother was a heavy equipment operator.
My boy works as an IT security administrator for an insurance company in down town Indy. He has about 10 people under him. He says there is no college or trade school to teach the people he hires. So they take a change on hiring a person with computer skills, they train them and out the door they go for better pay. So he's wised up a little, giving each of his employees a limited job description and spreading the work load out so no one becomes too smart. While working, he completed an on line business administration degree. Company paid for his classes. 6 figure job plus a nice Christmas bonus. Now he is thinking of looking for greener/richer pastures.
College, training, OJT and a union card in the trades is very important to get ahead.
