: I have a 1952 Ferguson TEA 20. It was originally a 6v system. It has been converted to 12V. I am having trouble starting the engine and it is running a little rough. There is a resistor (I think) between the battery and the original Lucas 6V coil. I still get 12V from the coil side of this resistor and the coil when I check it with a meter. It seems like I should get 6V. I am considering replacing the coil. Can I put a 12V coil in and remove the resistor anyway?

Hello Jay, I was wondering how you were coming with your ignition problem. Another similar problem that I had with a distributer is the points. If they are pitted, they might have become resistive and may not close well. If so they might need replacement. Also the grounding of the points and the condenser is important. If the condenser is not clamped down well, it could cause the points to pit and cause problems or possibly not run at all. A friend rebuilt his tractor engine because of that. The third possibility is the battery. With that old style coil setup and a weak battery, the coil might not get enough voltage during starting sometimes. I have an old ford truck that I was considering retrofitting a balast type coil with a manual switch to short out the balast resistor for starting in the winter.
Good Luck, Keith

Today's Featured Article - Harvestin Hay: The Early Years (Part 2) - by Pat Browning. The summer of 1950 was the start of a new era in farming for our family. I was thirteen, and Kathy (my oldest sister) was seven. At this age, I believed tractor farming was the only way, hot stuff -- and given a chance I probably would have used the tractor, Dad's first, a 1936 Model "A" John Deere, to go bring in the cows! And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th ... [Read Article]
