Live in Montana, In-laws in PA, Go back and forth every other year. We take route 30 to I-70. Stay on 70 to Indianapolis, get on I-74 to Davenport IA and then take I-80 to where it intersects with I-29 and get on I-29 North. From there you can go I-90 or I 94 depending on where you are heading in MT. Depending on where you are going in MT Hwy 2 is about your only option for the last stretch. We have found this route to avoid all toll roads, all of it (except parts of hwy 2 and route 30 in PA) are 4 lane free-way and by the time you avoid any traffic near Chicago it is about the same number of hours.
