Hi Mtractor, on a single acting cylinder there is only one hydraulic line and when the control valve is opened in one direction the high pressure oil flows out extending the cylinder and in the other valve in the other direction allows oil to flow back into the hydraulic reservoir. The only requirements is that there has to be a weight on the cylinder to force the oil back into the reservoir. The first three front end loaders that we had only had single acting cylinders on the lift arms.
Re 464, normally the remotes are double acting. The single acting valve just has a different spool in it and that is why the other hole is plugged. There are youtube videos explaining operation the different types hydraulic valves. BTW the 464 hydraulics are open center.
