We have to pay sales tax anytime a vehicle is bought new, or traded. Have to pay the tax before you can get your license plates. Plus show proof of insurance.
A number of years ago they passed a law that farmers can trade grain for a vehicle, and not have to pay the sales tax.
No sale. It is a barter or trade.
So then lots of people caught on. Friendly feed stores started selling these folks grain. Then you did the deal with the car dealer. The elevator wrote out a check to the car dealer on the "phantom" grain the buyer never had.
It worked for awhile. Not sure where it is at now. Our local COOP got scared and quit doing it.
