: I have a Cub Cadet with 17 hp Kohler 2 cyl. As I shut it off I noticed it was loading up with fuel pretty bad. About 1/2 hour later when I tried to start it, it wouldn't turn over. Not a mechanical lock, but a hydraulic lock. I pulled the plugs and when I hit the starter to see how it would act, it shot a stream of gas out each cylinder. I assume that the float in the carb is hung up or has a hole in it, and the gas is gravity feeding into the engine. I'm going to look into it tomorrow. Has anyone had a similar experience with the Kohler twin? I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, Mark R.

I used to work for a dealer and have seen this many times, especially on lawn tractors with vertical
crankshaft (1415,1420,1715,1720 models) The earliest of these models did not have an inline fuel filter and the top of the tank was higher
than the carb and when the tank was full the gravity pressure from the tank would force the needle off its seat. I recomend replacing the
small kohler inline filter with a regular automotive universal inline filter.Another problem i have seen is on models
with a fuel pump. The fuel pump has a steel plate on the diaphagm that can rust. Usually
the fuel pump is down stream from the filter so the rust goes from the pump to the carb
causing the needle valve to stick. You should tear the carb off and clean it before going
any further

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
