Correct. The field is energized from a connection to the output brush (which is connected to the Gen terminal)to ground through the regulator. A bad (or missing) regulator might not allow polarizing to happen. A sure way to force polarization is to ground the field terminal on the gen with a jumper. the spark that is going to happen is the result of the fact that the voltage also goes through the armature to ground. This does nothing foe the armature, but is the reason for the large spark. One second of contact is zero damage to the gen. Jim
