You are sucking air from the fuel tank. If this happens when the tank is half filled or less the tank pickup somehow gets a "breath" when the fuel is moving around in the tank. You can confirm this by cracking the bleeder bolt on top of the filters and pumping the primer pump and watching for air to exit. It'll take quite a few pumps to get the air out but then it should start right up. Next top off the tank and tractor should run fine from then on for the day. You'll need to drop the tank and repair/reposition the pickup tube or keep the tractor tank filled. This happened to my 5245 and I opted for now to keep the tank above half full.
