The spring counter acts the weight of the float; keeps the float from falling past its set bottom point preventing the needle valve from falling out its hole to far and jamming; and preventing vibration of the float. I have seen springs and wire clips on engines as small as lawn mowers. Some of them the needle valve sits inside the spring. This type stops the needle valve from sticking shut not allowing gas to flow in.
Some of you may have never seen the spring and never had any problems without the spring. Glad it worked out for you. I guess the Ford engineers with more education than all of us combined put the spring in the picture just to mess with our minds.
