I suppose you did limit the peak current to 5 amperes by having adequate resistance (ignition coil primary plus any additional resistance) in the line from 12v through your unit to tractor chassis (battery ground) when you installed it. Excess current will burn out the switch in it...SCR or MosFet. How fast it burns out depends on how much you are over 5 amps and the heat sinking in the electronic unit.
Ohms Law: I (current) = V (applied voltage)/R (series resistance), all in basic units (amps,volts, and ohms). When the electronic switch in the unit switches on, you cannot count it's resistance in the calculation because there isn't any......almost.
So considering your gen/alt. is putting out 14.5 v when running, to get 5 amps max, you need R = V/I for 14.5/5 = 2.9 ohms. If using a 6 volt coil in a 12v circuit you will need half the resistance to balance the voltage across the coil and resistor so it needs to be 1.5 ohms.
