we used to have a birdfeeder next to our 3 story old farmhouse & hawks would check out the bird activity from a long view while soaring next to the ridgeline just above the trees. If the feeder was thick with birds the hawks kept soaring until they were out of sightline behind the house, then semi-circle back & come in over the house & drop like a rock amongst the surprised birds. Sudden & surprising as the attack was, I never saw them get a bird. Whenever I looked out & saw no birds I knew the hawk had just been there.
