The pencil injectors get seized. Often you have to ruin them to get them out using a pry-bar, lady-slipper "bent-head" puller, etc. OTC does make a puller that does not work very well. It's just a slide-hammer with small jaws that grip the injector (not very well though).
You're not going to hurt the starter hooking a charger/booster direct. It MAY burn up the charger though.
