today the family started the 2015 maple syrup season. Four generations headed to the woods in the morning, But I wasn't there as a result of a really bad afternoon yesterday. My blood pressure dropped to all time lows and pulse rate up to an all time high. I have had several minor strokes, so we have a blood presure monitor in the house. The wife called our primary care doctor, and he squeezed me in for a 10:00 am apointment. I am also on Lupron, preliminary treatment for cancer, so I needed to have a chat with the doc. He cut my BP meds in half.
When I got home from the doctor visit, I got into my coveralls and headed to the woods, just in time to meet them coming back out of the woods for lunch break. My cousin Mike, who is in my kids generation, and the lead guy drilling the holes, wasn't doing good. He is a bit over weight and wasn't negociating very well in deep snow on showshoes, and he was wipped.
Decided to regroup after lunch and get a bit more help.
We all met at the saphouse at 1:30 and came up with a different plan. Another of my cousins, Kevin, (my generation), and one of Mike's sons Mikey, started out tapping and driving spiles. The rest of us eventually got into a routine where Mike, now sticking close to the trailer, would hang buckets close to the roads, and toss buckets with a cover in them out to another cousin tromping through the snow about 30 feet from the road, hanging buckets near him, and he would toss buckets back to me about 70 feet from the road. (The sugarbush was layed out years ago with parallel roads about 150 feet apart with a intersecting perpendicular road in the middle). This plan tossing buckets sure saved a lot of steps zigzaging from the edge of the road to the far reaches between roads.
Unfortunatly when we start gathering sap, we will have to carry sap in gathering buckets from the far trees to the road where the gathering tanks can go. At that point when we start gathering sap,I become a full time tractor driver.
At the end of the day we had 550 buckets hung and covered, and Kevin and Mikey were about 150 to 200 taps ahead of the bucket bergade.
The sap is running and I am afraid the sugaring season is coming in a rush, and we need to get the evaporators and sap storage tanks cleaned and ready for the first run which is starting now. I'm afraid we will be gathering sap and still trying to get all the buckets hung.
Just a side note. I'm feeling good tonight. Guess I just needed to get back in the woods again. It's been a long winter.
In the pic, the guy in the orange coat is Kevin's son. We have 2 gas powered tappers, and were running both at times.
I will post more detailed pics. tomarrow night. Sorry for all the rambling tonight.
Loren, the Acg.

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
