Ditches are burned to clear them of the vegetation that impedes water flow. To control thistle, you need to know which species you have. Canada thistle is virtually impossible eliminate without chemicals. It can be controlled with constant mowing or insects that your local Weed and Pest district or State University should be able to help you obtain. Trying to kill canada thistle with a shovel just makes it mad.
