Well there are different kinds of defense than from people. Up in his part of the country there are any number of varmints that could cause plenty of problems without going looking for them. I read some of the replies and skimmed most. I didn't notice where anybody made much if any reference to the need for protection from things other than people. Cats and not Sylvester, bears not Yogi and such. I guess If I was going out in the back woods much I would either have a pistol or a rifle with me. I have been out in some of the back country of SE Idaho with friends. Not a place I would want to be without something, and not some little folding pocket knife.
