In my opinion leave it at home. Unless you will be constantly using it(as a tool), such as going to the local pumpkin patch for a truck load or a camping trip. All it takes is some one with a bad idea and fast hands, then your "prize" knife will be their weapon of crime.
Forget to take it off at wrong place: gone(not as hard of feeling losing a small folding pocket knife). If you want to carry a knife go small. I always carried a small pocket knife, even took to school for a while. One day some fool had his knife and was tossing it at the ceiling, that day was the last I took mine thinking it would be taken if I used it. Now that I'm out its in the pocket full time again.
The chances of something happening that it would be needed for self defense is very low in small town. So again just leave the big knife home.
