I used to drive 50 miles to a sawmill who would sell me rough cut oak. That ran around $4-5 depending on grade and thickness. Local mills don't want to sell to the small guy and they only cut hard woods.
I recently found a guy who has his own sawmill. He is the only person who will take logs out of a yard and turn them into boards. I think he charges about a buck per ft to cut. I just tell him to give me some of the wood when he is done. I now have tulip popular and red oak drying and it basically free. I plan to have another oak taken down soon. He will pick up the log from my yard, he only a few miles away.
He only cuts good wood and I've paid him around half price, $3 per ft. Keep in mind this isn't construction grade wood. I don't think he even cuts pine or soft woods unless you bring him the log.
I think it would be cheaper and faster using OSB for decking.
My dad used to take his logs to mill and get shares. I hated working with wet ruff cut stuff.
