From my experiences, there is a big difference between trade unions and production unions. The trade unions are usually pretty decent, find work for their members, run apprentice programs, and tend to be quite professional. I have worked in a union mill in the past, and the union was a joke. The officers were more concerned about their perks than anything else, and couldn't be bothered to enforce their own rules. The only way to advance was by seniority. The company would try to hire the best people they could, but no one new could move up due to some of the lackluster employees higher up the seniority ladder.
I do think unions have a place, there are many people who will just put up with anything because that is how it is and not ask questions. We have reached a point where some of the unions really need to look at how to serve the rank and file best, even if itmeans working with the company and not against.
