The VE44 in the early CUmmins pick-ups really puts the fuel out under 600 PRM and advances the timing when cold. That's why you start looking for where it's sucking air if it takes more than 1 turn of the crank before it fires. When warm you often just bump the starter and they run.

Electronic engine controls can do that as well, but they have to wait for the booster pump to build rail pressure before they can fire properly on a common-rail set-up.
