I saw my share of 3208's working at a Ford dealer in the mid 80's. They were a very popular marine engine also. If you wanted a gut less engine that was hard on fuel and ran forever get a 3208 and live with it. You went to tinkering with it to try and curve the gut less part and you were asking for trouble.
