I had less than a 2 year old whirlpool, which I think now is the same as maytag. The top bearing on tranny was making a high pitch sound. I got a full refund on machine, had an extended warranty. They said it would cost too much to repair. Less than 2 year old and cost too much to fix. I ended up with machine and got a full refund. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK GOD FOR LOWES EXTENDED WARRANTY. If it didn't have it, I would have been out everything.

I did some research. I wanted top loading. Don't want to bend over with side loaders and don't want the smell of door gasket to deal with. The only machine I could find under $500 was a GE. When I looked underneath new machines they all the rest looked like a whirlpool clone. The GE was built like the old school washers. Mechanical timer. No locking lids. You set the water level.
